The Complete TEF & TCF Breakdown
Both the TEF and TCF are official French proficiency exams accepted by IRCC for Express Entry. They test the same four core skills, but they differ in format, structure, and strategy. Here’s everything you need to know.
The Four Skills Tested
Both exams evaluate these four abilities. Master all four, and CLB 7 is within reach.
Listening
Compréhension orale
You’ll hear conversations, interviews, radio broadcasts, and announcements. The challenge: understanding natural-speed French with different accents, then answering multiple-choice questions under time pressure.
Reading
Compréhension écrite
You’ll read articles, emails, notices, and short texts, then answer comprehension questions. The challenge: reading efficiently, identifying key information quickly, and not getting lost in unfamiliar vocabulary.
Writing
Expression écrite
You’ll write messages, emails, letters, or short essays responding to prompts. The challenge: structuring your response clearly, using appropriate register (formal vs. informal), and staying within word limits while covering all required points.
Speaking
Expression orale
You’ll have a live conversation with an examiner: introducing yourself, answering questions, role-playing scenarios, and persuading. The challenge: thinking in real-time, managing nerves, and structuring spoken responses under pressure.

How Scores Translate to CLB Levels
Your exam score converts to a CLB (NCLC) level. CLB 7 is the threshold for maximum Express Entry points.
The minimum for maximum Express Entry French bonus points. This is our goal for every student.
Higher scores earn even more CRS points. Achievable with focused, strategic preparation.
A solid foundation, but not enough for the full French bonus. We’ll build from here.
Exam Day Tips
Small details make a big difference. Here’s what we teach our students before they walk into the exam room.
- Read each question twice before answering, many points are lost to misreading
- Manage your time: don’t spend too long on one question
- For speaking: structure your answers with a clear beginning, middle, and end
- For writing: plan your response before you start writing
- Use transition words to show logical flow in both writing and speaking
- Stay calm: if you miss a word in listening, focus on the overall meaning
